Field Marshal Asim Munir named Pakistan’s first-ever Chief of Defence Forces (CDF)

The appointment of Asim Munir as CDF marks a historic shift in how Pakistan’s armed forces are commanded. Under the new structure:

  • Unified Command: Army, Air Force, and Navy operations will now have a single point of strategic and operational command — the CDF. This aims to streamline decision-making, especially in multi-domain operations (air, land, sea).

  • Extended Tenure & Expanded Powers: Munir’s tenure resets for five years under the new post. Legal and structural amendments extend his hold over the military hierarchy.

  • Abolition of CJCSC: The long-standing office of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee — which coordinated between services — has been abolished. This consolidates all military leadership under one head.

  • Signal of Stability or Centralization? Proponents argue this will improve coordination and national security readiness. Critics warn it centralizes too much power in a single individual at a time when Pakistan faces internal and external pressures.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a public statement, said the move aligns military structure with modern warfare needs and called the decision “historic and necessary”.
