The appointment of Asim Munir as CDF marks a historic shift in how Pakistan’s armed forces are commanded. Under the new structure:
Unified Command: Army, Air Force, and Navy operations will now have a single point of strategic and operational command — the CDF. This aims to streamline decision-making, especially in multi-domain operations (air, land, sea).
Extended Tenure & Expanded Powers: Munir’s tenure resets for five years under the new post. Legal and structural amendments extend his hold over the military hierarchy.
Abolition of CJCSC: The long-standing office of Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee — which coordinated between services — has been abolished. This consolidates all military leadership under one head.
Signal of Stability or Centralization? Proponents argue this will improve coordination and national security readiness. Critics warn it centralizes too much power in a single individual at a time when Pakistan faces internal and external pressures.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in a public statement, said the move aligns military structure with modern warfare needs and called the decision “historic and necessary”.
