Pakistan’s Supreme Court Meets in Crisis, Judges Quit Over Amendment

On 14 November 2025, the Supreme Court of Pakistan called an extraordinary full-bench meeting in the wake of the 27th Amendment that curtailed its powers, amid which two of its senior judges submitted resignations citing the reform as a “grave assault” on the constitution. The resignations highlight deep unease within the judiciary and raise concerns about the independence of the bench going forward. For the rule of law in Pakistan, this moment may mark a turning point: either institutions adapt to altered power dynamics, or their autonomy becomes increasingly symbolic. The event also raises broader questions about checks and balances in Pakistan’s governance, future judicial appointments, and the credibility of courts in high-stake disagreements. In an era where institutional trust is already fragile, the fallout from this shake-up will be closely watched by domestic and external stakeholders alike.
